We are excited Better Homes and Gardens is doing a full story on DIY home security and safety. It launches in a few weeks on TV, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled. We thought why not do our own tips and tricks to keep your home secure whilst we are waiting for it to air.
1. Keep your valuables in a safe place away from the main bedroom. Burglars are usually on a tight schedule and will target the most obvious places. Have a box of your valuables in your childs bedroom. They usually don't touch kids bedrooms.
2. If you are going away, ask your neighbours to collect your mail. Burglars try to go for the easiest place to rob.
3. Sleep with your car keys next to your bed. If you hear a noise press the lock button on the car and the lights will flash scaring anyone away.
4. Put window locks on your windows, or cut up some dowel long enough to put in the window tracks behind the window.
5. If you are going away, leave a light on that is visible to the street. This way it looks like someone is up of a night.
6. Leave a radio on whilst you are away. The sounds should deter thieves.
7. Have a lock chain on your main door, for extra security of a night.
8. If you have one of our DIY wireless alarm systems, turn the alarm onto 'stay mode' of a night to arm all of your door and window sensors.
9. If you have lots of trees or shrubs around the entrances to the home, think about cutting them back. Burglars tend to go for homes that have low visibility from the street.
10. Test your security system is working correctly every few months (we dont want the neighbours ignoring the alarm because they hear it so often - so even pre-warn them). Burglarize yourself by arming the system and going outside for 5mins. Walk back in and make sure it picks you up.
11. Talk to your neighbours. If you are going away let them know to keep an eye on any weird activity.
Most importantly don't be afraid, just be prepared.
